The Sandberg Goldberg Bernthal Family Foundation and its subsidiaries and affiliates, including LeanIn.Org, LLC, Lean In Girls, LLC, and OptionB.Org, LLC (collectively, “SGB,” “we,” or “us”), value our users and respects their privacy. This privacy policy (this “Privacy Policy”) describes the information we may collect about you when you use our websites located at leanin.org, optionb.org, and sgb.org, and all subdomains and mobile versions of those websites that link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, our “Sites”) or (ii) any applications owned or controlled by us (“Apps”) that link to this Privacy Policy. We refer to our Sites and Apps, and all the features and functionality that they offer, and the information, resources, tools, materials, and services available on them, collectively as our “Services” for purposes of this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy explains how we may use and share the information we collect when you access any of our Services, and the privacy rights you may have with respect to our processing (collection, use, sharing, or other handling) of information identifiable to you (your “personal information”). Where we rely on your consent as the legal basis for processing your personal information, you may withdraw that consent at any time (see “Your Rights Regarding Personal Information” below). Please note that all capitalized terms used in this Privacy Policy have the meanings provided in our Terms of Service, unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy.

Collection of Information

When you interact with us through our Services, we may collect or receive the following types of information:

Information You Provide Directly. You may provide information directly to us in several different ways. For example, we collect the information you provide us when you:

  • Contact us with inquiries;
  • Respond to one of our surveys;
  • Register for access to our Services, including thorough an Account;
  • Purchase items through our Store;
  • Use certain Services or;
  • Participate in Lean In Circles, Networks, or other events, or when you make electronic correspondences with us or leaders, Circles, or Networks.

This information may include your name and e-mail address, telephone number, address, photograph, credit card information, and other information that may identify you, including geographic information.

Information We Collect Automatically. We also may receive and store certain information about you and your computer automatically when you connect to our Services. The automatically collected information may include:

  • The type of web browser and operating system you have used to access our Services;
  • Your IP address (which is a number automatically assigned to your computer when you access the Internet) or mobile device identifier;
  • The domain name of your Internet service provider;
  • The website you visited before you came to our Services; and
  • Information about the content you view and the features you access on our Services.

We may collect this information using cookies and similar tracking technologies (such as web beacons and pixels). Unless you consent, we do not place any cookies on your browser that are not strictly necessary to the functioning of our Services (“essential cookies”), and you may manage your cookie preferences at any time by visiting [insert cookie settings link].

Children’s Information. Other than as described in the separate Lean In Girls Privacy Policy | Lean In, which, as noted, has a different scope than this Privacy Policy, SGB does not knowingly collect any personal information from a child under the age of 16. We encourage parents and legal guardians to monitor their children’s Internet usage and to instruct their children not to provide personal information online without their permission. If you have reason to believe that a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will endeavour to delete that information from our databases.

Use of Information

We use the information we collect and receive for the following general purposes:

  • To provide you with access to the Services you have requested (including events and newsletters);
  • To respond to your questions and assist with any problems you may encounter in accessing or using our Services;
  • To permit you to participate in the Services, including in Circles and Networks (as further described below under “Circles, Networks, and Co-sponsors,”), and in connection with receiving e-mail and other communications among members and sponsors participating in Circles and Networks;
  • To process and fulfil orders you place with us, including through the Store;
  • To help us improve the content and functionality of our Services;
  • To better understand your interests and to contact you in the future to tell you about Services we believe will be of interest to you (with respect to such contact, you may have the right to object at any time (see “Your Rights Regarding Personal Information” below);
  • To conduct research on your and our other users’ demographics, interests, and choices;
  • To preserve the security of our Services, including our Sites and Apps.
  • For any other purpose disclosed to you at the time we collect the information, or otherwise with your consent. Where processing is based on your consent, you may withdraw your consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal; and
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations (e.g., tax, accounting, and regulatory requirements).

We have several legal bases for processing your information as described above. Where we are acting to respond to your requests, to provide you with our Services, and to improve those Services, the legal bases are (i) that the processing is necessary for us to perform a contract with you or (ii) for our legitimate interest in furthering our objectives, including operating and improving our Services, understanding our user base, engaging with our members, preventing fraud, and ensuring information security. Where there are legal requirements to use or share your information, we process your information in order to comply with legal obligations. In exceptional circumstances, where there are vital or public interests to do so, we may process your information to serve those interests. And when you have provided prior consent for us to process your information, we may rely on that consent for such processing, unless and until you withdraw such consent, which you may do at any time with respect to our future processing.

Sharing of Information

We do not sell personal information, and we strictly limit access to it by any persons outside the organization (“third parties”). We may share your personal information with the following third parties without further notice to you:

  • Members of Circles and Networks. When you participate in a Circle or Network, Circle and Network leaders and participants can see you listed as a member of the Circle or Network (your “Member Listing”), unless you specify, using your Account or to your Circle or Network leader, that you would only like your Circle to be able to view your Member Listing. Your Member Listing includes your name, geographic location (if provided), email address, and additional information about you that you may choose to share, including in connection with the creation of your Account on the Services or in connection with your participation in a Circle or Network. If you or your Circle joins a Network, the leaders of that Network can see your Member Listing and your email address. If you’re the leader of a Circle or Network, members and users can see your name, geographic location (if provided), and profile picture. You may, however, adjust the privacy settings on our platform to limit access to the information you provide.
  • Affiliates. We may share your information with our affiliates—companies that control, are controlled by, or are under common control with, SGB.
  • Readers of your User Content. When you provide User Content via our Services or otherwise to us, there could be information about you included in that User Content. For example, you may have revealed your name, age, location, or other biographical information in the context of telling a story about yourself. In that case, whenever we share your User Content with our other users, licensees, business partners, or other third parties (including Third-Party Services) in accordance with the rights you have granted to us regarding that User Content as described in the Terms of Service, we also share whatever personal information or other information you chose to include within that User Content.
  • Business Partners. We also may share your information with our licensees, business partners, and other Third-Party Services such as in connection with your participation in Circles or Networks. Some Circles and Networks may be cosponsored by Third-Party Services, such as a social networking services like Facebook, X, or Tumblr, with a particular interest in the mission of that Circle or Network. These Co-sponsors have access to the Member Listings and email addresses of the members of the Circles and Networks they sponsor. We may also share your name, location, and biographical information that you chose to include within your User Content so that it may be published along with other User Content of yours.
  • Service Providers. We may share your information with entities that provide services to us, including companies that provide web analytics, data processing, advertising, e-mail distribution, payment processing, order fulfilment, Account access and login services, and other services. We limit the personal information we provide to such service providers (including Third-Party Services) to the information they need to perform their specific function, and we require them to restrict their processing of the information to such functions.
  • Operators of Integrated Third-Party Services. We may share your information with the operators of Third-Party Services that are integrated with our Services in some way, as more fully explained in the section below entitled “Integration with Social Networking and Other Services.”
  • Other Parties When Required by Law or as Necessary to Protect Safety and Security or Our Services. There may be instances when we disclose your information to other parties in order to:
  • Protect and defend the legal rights of SGB, and users of our Services or any other person;
  • Protect the safety and security of users of our Services;
  • Prevent fraud (or for risk management purposes); or
  • Comply with or respond to the Law or legal process or a request for cooperation by a government entity.
  • Parties Involved in Equity or Asset Transactions. If we make a sale, donation, or transfer of assets, or are otherwise involved in a corporate merger, transfer, reorganization, dissolution or similar event, we may transfer your information to one or more third parties as part of that transaction or for purposes of diligence in preparation for the transaction.

Integration with Social Networking and Other Services

Our Services may allow you to enable or log in via various Third-Party Services, such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, or X. By directly integrating these Third-Party Services, we aim to make your online experiences richer and more personalized. When you add a Third-Party Service account to our Services or log into our Services (including your Account) using your Third-Party Service account, we may collect relevant information necessary to enable our Services to access that Third-Party Service and your information contained within that Third-Party Service. We also may share your information with the operator of that Third-Party Service to facilitate or enhance delivery of that Third-Party Service or other services to you.

As part of an integration with a Third-Party Service, that Third-Party Service may provide us with access to certain information that you have provided to the Third-Party Service, and we will use, store, and disclose such information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. For example, if we administer a group using a Third-Party Service, we may receive any information that such Third-Party Service may make available to group administrators. However, please remember that the manner in which any Third-Party Service uses, stores, and shares your information is governed by the policies of the operator of that Third-Party Service, and we are not responsible for the privacy practices or other actions of any Third-Party Service that may be enabled within our Services.

Third-Party Functionality and Links to Third-Party Sites

As noted above, some of the functionality on our Services is provided by third parties and Third-Party Services not affiliated with SGB. These entities may collect or receive certain information about your use of our Services, including through the use of cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these Third-Party Services. In addition, our Services may contain links to other websites not operated or controlled by us, including to Third-Party Materials. These links do not imply that we endorse or that we have reviewed any Third-Party Materials. If you provide any personal information through any Third-Party Service or through the use of any Third-Party Materials, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the privacy policies and practices of such Third-Party Service or the operator of any Third-Party Materials.

International Transfers of Information

We are based in the United States. Regardless of your location, when you use our Services, your personal information will be processed in the United States. Please note that the data protection Laws applicable to us in the United States may differ from those applicable in the jurisdiction where you are located.

We or our service providers also may process your personal information in locations outside of the United States, such as the European Union (EU) or the United Kingdom (UK). If we transfer your personal information to the United States from another jurisdiction, we shall do so in accordance with applicable data protection Laws, such as the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation. We do not rely on your consent as the legal basis for this transfer. Instead, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as approved standard contractual clauses, as permitted under applicable Law. Security

We take steps to protect the information provided via our Services from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no Internet or e-mail transmission is ever fully secure or error-free. Please keep this in mind when sharing any personal information with us.

Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected and in any event for no longer than is required by applicable Law or justified by our legitimate interests. The criteria we apply to determine retention periods include the duration of our relationship with you, any legal obligations to retain records for minimum periods, and whether retention is necessary in light of our legal position.

Your Rights Regarding Personal Information

Depending on the Laws of the jurisdiction in which you reside, you may have one or more of the following rights with respect to some or all of your personal information:

  • To request a copy or description of the personal information we have collected about you;
  • To request that we correct any inaccuracies in your personal information;
  • To request that we delete your personal information;
  • To opt-out of or request that we limit the processing of certain of your personal information;
  • To request that we transmit your personal information to a specified third party in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format;
  • To object to (opt out of) the sharing of your personal information for targeted behavioral advertising; and
  • To withdraw your consent to any processing of your personal information where such processing is permissible based on your consent.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of the rights to which you are entitled.

You may make a request on your own behalf or, if you wish to designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, you may do so by providing us with a signed declaration stating that you permit that individual to act on your behalf and stating such individual’s full name, address, email address, and phone number. We may, after receiving your request, require additional information from you to verify your or your designated agent’s identity in order to protect your personal information from unauthorized disclosure or deletion at the request of someone other than you or your legal representative. We cannot grant your request if we cannot verify your identity or authority to make the request.

We endeavor to respond to a verifiable request within 30 days of its receipt. If we require more time, we will inform you of the reason and extension period in writing.

Please be aware that we are not obligated to grant all requests that you may make, depending on applicable Law. For example, we may deny a request for deletion of personal information if we have a legal basis for retaining that information. If your request is denied, you may appeal that decision by contacting our privacy support team at info@sgb.org. Within 30 days of receiving your appeal request, we will inform you in writing of any action taken or not taken in response, along with a written explanation of the reasons in support of the response.

Depending on the jurisdiction in which you reside, you may have the right to contact a governmental authority about the result of the appeal or to submit a complaint.
