A Lean In Circle is a small group of peers who meet regularly to support each other’s personal and professional growth. Circles create a safe space to build skills, share experiences, and take action.
Each Circle is typically made up of 8–12 people who meet monthly or twice a month. Circles were designed for women but can be helpful to anyone who wants to build their leadership skills.
Members use discussion guides from LeanIn.Org to talk about topics like leadership, confidence, negotiation, burnout, and resilience. The goal is simple: help women lean into their ambitions — together.
Lean In Circles meet regularly to have structured, honest conversations about work and life. Each meeting focuses on a specific topic and includes discussion questions and practical exercises.
Circles are:
Small and consistent, so trust can grow
Confidential, so members can speak openly
Action-oriented, so conversations lead to real change
Members set goals, hold each other accountable, and celebrate progress. Over time, Circles become powerful networks of support and opportunity.
Lean In Circles are started by individuals around the world, so availability varies by community. If you know someone already in a Circle, you can ask if their group is open to new members.
If you don’t find a Circle nearby, you can start your own. Anyone can start a Lean In Circle by inviting friends, colleagues, or peers who want to grow together and support one another.
Lean In Circles are free to start and join. The only requirement is a commitment to show up, participate, and support each other’s growth.
Starting a Lean In Circle is simple. Gather a small group of women who are committed to growing together and register your Circle on connect.leanin.org.

You don’t need to be an expert to lead. You just need to be willing to facilitate conversation and create space for others to speak. Leadership often begins by raising your hand.
Lean In Circles help women build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and take concrete steps toward their goals.
Research shows that women benefit from peer support and sponsorship. In Circles, members practice:
Negotiating and self-advocacy
Giving and receiving feedback
Setting boundaries
Navigating bias and setbacks
When women support each other, they are more likely to stay ambitious — and to stay in the workforce.
Lean In Circles are for women at all stages of life and career — including students, entrepreneurs, women returning to work, and those navigating career transitions.
Not all women want the same things. Some are building careers. Some are restarting. Some are redefining success. Circles honor different paths while supporting growth and leadership in whatever form that takes.
Some Circles are women-only spaces. Others are open to allies. Each Circle sets its own guidelines.
Lean In Circles focus on the skills, mindset, and relationships women need to advance in their careers and grow as leaders.
Common topics include:
Building confidence and overcoming self-doubt
Getting a sponsor who can accelerate your career growth
Negotiating pay, promotions, and stretch opportunities
Leading with influence and credibility
Navigating bias and workplace dynamics
Each discussion is grounded in research and practical tools. Circles help women clarify their ambitions, strengthen their leadership voice, and take meaningful steps toward the future they want to build.
The workplace is evolving rapidly — from AI-driven change to rising burnout and ongoing caregiving demands. At the same time, women remain underrepresented in senior leadership and more likely to experience career slowdowns during major life transitions.
Lean In Circles help women adapt and lead by providing:
A structured space to reflect and problem-solve
Practical leadership skills for today’s workplace
Peer support during career transitions, burnout, and growth
Circles strengthen networks, build resilience, and help women move forward with clarity and confidence.
Lean In Circles work best when members focus on practical, real-life topics. Popular ideas include setting career goals, practicing difficult conversations, building confidence, and supporting each other through challenges like negotiating or returning to work. Many Circles also use Lean In’s free guides to structure meetings and turn discussion into action.
Lean In Circles are designed to help women grow together. The goal is simple: build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create a strong support network. By meeting regularly, Circle members share experiences, give honest feedback, and take concrete steps toward their personal and professional goals.
Sheryl Sandberg started Lean In Circles to help women support each other in pursuing their ambitions. After hearing from women around the world who felt isolated in their careers, she saw that small, trusted groups could make a big difference. Circles create a space where women can share challenges, build skills, and take action together toward equality.
Lean In Circles help you find mentorship through community, not just one person. Instead of searching for a single mentor, Circle members support and learn from each other — sharing advice, feedback, and opportunities. This peer mentorship model makes it easier to build meaningful connections and grow together over time.
Starting a women’s group at work can be simple. Begin by inviting a small group of colleagues who want to support each other’s growth. Set a regular meeting time, choose topics that matter — like career development or confidence — and create a space for honest conversation. Lean In Circles offer free guides and tools to help you get started and keep meetings focused and impactful.
Advancing your career starts with believing you belong at the table. Seek out opportunities, share your ideas, and pursue roles that help you grow. Building a strong support network — like a Lean In Circle — can provide advice, accountability, and encouragement along the way. When women support each other and take action, careers move forward.
