Gender: Co-Ed Status: Active Duty Description: Creating harmony and creating an environment of openness in the workplace for men and women. Open to all members of the Coast Guard family-civilian and military. Held at CGHQ on Tuesday or Wednesday during the workday (probably around noon). Detailed description: Long before Shakespeare coined the phrase, “Band of Brothers” (Henry V), societies were often organized as bands, clans, tribes, limited by geography and resources. These tribes often co-existed, some competed, but the common denominator was each tribe exhibited loyalty and kinship that we often don’t see in modern society. There are two books that I think would be worth considering in using in guiding this circle: Sebastian Junger’s Tribe and Captain D. Michael Abrashoff’s It’s Your Ship. Both books use war as a backdrop for mobilizing their arguments in favor of a renewal of what might be considered our more primitive or ancient values. While Abrashoff’s sub-title: “Management Technques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy,” may be lacking in humility, but the concept of rekindling a sense of belonging as an effective management concept connects directly to Junger’s proposition stated in his sub-title, “On Homecoming and Belonging.” In order to belong to any group, loyalty, trust and harmony are required…we all need to get along to be successful members of the group.
We’re always looking for new members. Join today to be a part of Lean In’s global community.
Circles are small groups of women who come together—online or offline—for real talk and peer support.
We all need a safe space for real talk, inspiration, and support. Right now, we need community more than ever.
