tl;dr: Read the last paragraph for a description of this specific circle I recently spent a couple of months interning with Facebook and was briefly introduced to the idea of Lean In circles. After hearing Sheryl Sandberg herself speak about these circles and the commendable success of their active participants, I decided it would be great to create such circles at Cornell in order to foster success in Computer Science, Information Science, and other related fields. The Lean In movement is a movement in which women and other groups of people commonly underrepresented in the technology industry bolster each others efforts through encouragement. As I understand it, the goal behind this movement is for these groups to exceed expectations and shatter limiting beliefs they encounter in the technology industry. I am hard pressed to find any counterarguments against such a vision, but the Lean In movement has received little to no exposure on the Cornell University campus. Now is the time for us to address this issue. Cornell University is regarded as a prolific institution for a myriad of reasons. I created this circle to serve as a supportive environment for students interested in CS 1110 and CS 2110 specifically. However, I hope to see circles proliferate on our campus so that we may add "addressing gender disparity and lack of diversity in the tech industry" to that long list of reasons in the future.
